Those of you who have teenagers, or work with teenagers, or ever went to high school--I want you to think for a moment what your average group of teenagers look like when they're hanging out. Got an image in your mind?
I currently have three children of the teenage persuasion. At any particular point in time, one is ignoring me, one is rolling his/her eyes, and one is fighting with the other two. Or sleeping. Sometimes they also eat the left over pizza without saving me any.
I've been looking for pictures of teenagers to use for my book trailer for Slayers. I need pictures of teens who look a little suspicious, maybe even a little dangerous.
Shutterstock has approximately 5 gazillion pictures, many of teens, so I didn't think it would be a problem. Here are the sorts of pictures I found that show teens hanging out.

Yeah, that's the sort of thing my kids and their friends do all of the time.
Oh, and here's a typical day at high school.

Yep, that's what high school was like for me.

Where exactly do I send my children to turn them into these happy people photobanks show teens being?
So then I typed in upset teens. The pictures still don't work for the trailer, but I think these three photos could make a good picture book called, One Day You Will Go To Junior High

Yeah, those last three pretty much sum up the teenage years . . .

From my experience with teenage girls, that last sequence of three pictures could have played out in the course of one single afternoon. (Fueled by 4,000 text messages)
Are these for real? lol....
:) Yeah... that's not what we're like.
I can't believe that that is shutterstock's view of a teenager.
Are those actually textbooks the kids in the second photo are holding? And they're smiling while holding them?? That is so wrong.
I WISH that's how teens looked. Nice, neat appearances, happy smiles on their faces. When I see teens (in real life) they usually have a grumpy expression and clothes to match their mood. Although there are exceptions. If you want, I can take pictures of teens around my house! Ha! =)We have a lot of that normalcy around here.
When you find out where to send your teens to get them to look like those happy teenagers in the pictures, will you please let me know? I have three I'd like to send with them.
What? Teens aren't really like that? My oldest turns 13 next year. You're telling me that he won't stand around with a group of friends, textbooks in hand, grinning and thinking fondly of homework? Dang. I was so looking forward to the teenage years.
I like that the last three rotate through which girl is hurt and crying. Now, that, seems like junior high!
Oh my gosh! Jessie Clark, you're right! The only person who's not "upset" is the curly haired red head!
That's so funny. I love the backstabbing of the last few pics. Oh, Junior High.
By the way, your books make me want to sit in a corner of my house and ignore my children and read all day.
That's fitting because that's how I write my books--in a corner, ignoring my children. Hey, whatever works!
That's hysterical! I actually DO have a few photos of me with my teen friends all hugging, laughing, falling over each other in glee, etc. But for the MOST part, we were making faces, teasing each other, and there was a good amount of hurt feelings or griping about life.
Don't take those photos to heart. We curly-haired red-heads aren't all mean.
This post made me laugh until I cried. You are so stinkin' funny.
- lots of things are funny. lots of your books, janette, are funny also. -
